Hiero × Akomplice @ Fuzion, 11.4.10

*©

Just a couple hours on the countdown till my Santa Barbara mandem, sexy fasonistas and fine glass aficionados converge on Fuzion SB. Starting at 5:00PM tonight, 11.4.10, Fuzion will be hosting a reception for Hieroglyphics & Akomplice, to kick-off the release of a highly-anticipated collaboration effort between the two crews. Over years of progressive innovation and creative product, AK and Hiero have long built a mutual respect and admiration for urban aesthetics toward one another. Finally manifesting into fruition this year, AK is taking you back with one their massively popular Hoodie Varsity silhouette designs. The jacket will be adorned with the distinct Akomplice trademark, as well as Hiero's OG flavor-- Originally designed by Del, the son of an abstract artist, the 3rd-eye straight faced logo has become a staple image in hip-hop. It can be seen all over the world; from bombed up concrete walls graff-art world capital São Paulo, to tatted-up Oakland badmen, to a 5-9 fitted on the dome of that skater grinding curbs outside your house. In a 2000 interview, Del himself recalled how the image alone increased Hiero's promotional perception, "when I invented that symbol, I never thought it would get this big [...] I think slowly but surely people are starting to pay attention to us."

Just in time for an impending winter, these limited-edition pieces will keep you looking crisp outside and warm inside. Cozy arm-struts as you roll one up. As stated, this is a exclusive product based off Hiero~AK's synergistic qualities. It is sure to sell out. Consider that after today, it will only be available to purchase from Hieroglyphics and Akomplice's respective online-retail stores. I would recommend getting your ass down to Fuzion today and cop that shit!! Must also be mentioned that Hiero went into the studio to make a tune specifically for this. The jacket will come with an unreleased Hiero digi-dubplate! In addition to "The Collab" itself, there will be plenty more ill gear to scope and purchase. Exclusive new products will be showcased from Fuzion's wicked apparel, which has become a staple in SB, as well and their incredible selection of high-end glasswork. Further, Akomplice will have more signature gear rolling out their arsenal of urban wear. Personally, I've been buying AK gear since 2006, and rate it as one of the top it its industry... although to be fair, there actually isn't an industry when it comes to an AK design. The creative uniquity and strict-drive to separate from mass-appeal and popular trend, makes AK they're own industry: Unmatched.

Shit-- just spent too much time writing... it's time get ready. Head on down to Fuzion's storefront location right now, located at 1115 State St., Santa Barbara. Come kick it with some of the Hiero members and peep out the illin' threads whilst surrounded by beautiful art and beautiful people.

---

Oh yeah, nearly forgot. Y'all know Hieroglyphics wouldn't rolling into town without a show, right? Following the reception will be a performance of Souls of Mischief w/ Pep Love!! The feature will be SC's Virbrant EYEris, an experimental hip-hop/dubstep crew. But foremost, my homeboy NUK will be opening to get Velvet Jones kicked-off correct! Conveniently, you can get your pre-sale tickets at Fuzion. I wish I could be there tonight... but unfortunately my Santa Babylon clique will be playing AKA's "Dub-Hoppin'" at EOS nightclub. Ironically, the event is sponsored by Fuzion and Akomplice, in cooperation with Nightowl, an SB promotion coalition. 2 rooms: Hip-hop and Dubstep. Headlining the latter, you can find myself, Hoodzpah, rinsing-out on the mic with our face-melting DJs. Whatever way you roll down State tonight, get to Fuzion for the pre-party. Cause either way... tonight is gonna be off the hook! Yep. It's like that and a-- a Hieroglyphics, yeeaah!! P.E.A.C.E.

Out-note: When I heard my choice emcee of the Oakland collective, Pep Love, was going to be accompanying Souls of Mischief, I thought a couple 2010 remixed gems would be fitting. Per usual, my standard end-post audio is by NUK, off his promo mixtape, covering Deltron 3030's "Mastermind". Additionally, the video --although 2010 creation-- will no doubt take you back to 1993. Pep, teaming up with some of the Bay's rising stars on hip-hop's most classic riddim. Enjoy the revamped nostalgia... but those golden days ain't over. Hiero back a'gone '10 till infinity!

Hoodzpah - That's Me (Promo Video)

[PROMO VIDEO IS POSTED AT BOTTOM OF THIS PAGE]

So then it began... Two south-coast Cali natives took to the streets of Boston to shoot a music video. 1 day available, basic 2 man crew. One with a baller camera, simple lavaliere audios, and a sense of direction. The other with an exclusive Ferrari-drivers pack full of fresh threads, and a boombox. Why would two people who have never officially produced music come to shoot a promo music video?? My best guess is the 24-pack of East-coast ale the night before when it had randomly occurred to us. Like typical drunken fools, we thought: "why not." But this duo goes way back through the terrain of time with familiarity. So much of our pent up potential toward a strikingly tantamount passion for music... always seeming to take an unknown direction. But direction, no doubt. Just a relatively conscious pair of headstrong hip-hop heads with nothing but the most pure feeling for the music and culture. Yet we never managed to materialize any original productions simply because of distance decay and that often-bitchy, black swan named, Fate. The newly purchased camera helped invigorate our video ideation, since "pretty fucking dope" for it is an understatement. That night prior, it made man look like a Valkyrie in rooftop shots.

So the next day we decided to make a promo grime tune. Yes, now it gets more random. It was an intoxicating stupid idea of course, since no one knows what grime really is in the U.S. And don't try and tell me you do, cause I barely know what it is and I know it better than you. No hype-- just reality (excluding UK). Shit, grime barely knows itself on its own terms. It's champions of the sound will concede it as the most ambiguous genre in the current moments of electronic music. That's also what makes it so fresh, exciting and open to new ideas whilst adapting and utilizing characteristics across the musical spectrum. Now it's even being influenced beyond its original stapled characteristic of UKG, dancehall, DnB, and hip-hop. Whatever next level trend develops, grime will have played a role, knowingly or not. I think that unseen legacy will have a bigger impact than its current receptions; similar to that of short-lived 2-step and speed garage had imprinted on the culture, which was so subtle, yet massive.

Now then... is what I do grime?? I have no clue. I would say yes, but if Logan Sama would say no, I would be inclined to take his word for it. The Kiss.100 DJ is after all a foremost figure in the scene. His own words do make me wonder what his actual take on my style would be: "As long as artists retain the attitude, vernacular, style, and slang they learned picking up the mic on pirate radio spitting to grime, they are still grime to me." I believe I execute those characteristics well on my end. I lived on the same block as the CB-1's well-established emcee, Simbad Fresh. Front-man of Cambridge's Restoration Camp, aka Merciless, Sim was a strong mentor. Man just dropped another versatile mixtape, "Smooth Operator," which you got to check out. Dwelling in the UK urban environment gave me an experience, and eventual knowledge, that just listening to and reading about abroad can never achieve. It's a culture thang. Attending events such as East-Anglia's infamous "WARNING!" as well as regular night-by night-travels to LDN on the weekends, which also increased my aptitude of the culture.

During over a year long stay through 2008, it was a post-pirate radio era in the UK. I would never pick up a microphone until the winter preceding 2010; on minimal back-up with SMOG's emcee, Kemst, at Santa Babylon's "Autumn Dubsfest", officially. But I studied the methodologies. I mean, I had wrote hip-hop for a couple years, (just like 1/4 the rest of the world). But let's rewind back to the UK-- vocal-bias aside, dubstep actually introduced me to grime. The first tune that truly broke my initial resistance to 2-step bass' foreign nature, was Plastician and Skepta's now classic FWD>> anthem, "Intensive Snare." I recall blasting Steppa's Delight compilayion with with my 38-year-old mate traversing the streets of London in an inconspicuously, conspicuous white moving-van. Memorably epitomized by a chest pound followed with a shout of, "BASS!", in inter-class cultural harmony. Authenticity.

Afterward, I would attempt to transcend those characteristics into a stateside style, without hijacking any "accents", or elements that should definitely remain in the British realm. Note to people: using British slang, or the linguistic vernacular of speaking/rapping in a UK origin, does not indicate an "accent" simply because you're used to hearing such words and speech in the original English tongue. As Kemst put it straight to me, "they're just words." Indeed... And as emcees they are our tools. Tré Mission, representing Toronto, is gaining recognition on both sides of the Atlantic for his North American grime. As far as I can tell, he is one of the few to realize grimes accessibility and adaptability outside of the UK and has built intelligently upon it. Keep a look out for him, and check out his free "Don't Think" promo release out now. I won't get too into the idea of grime being strictly British, or even as some claim, 'exclusive to London'.

Grime is going on 8 years now. In this exponentially accelerating information age, any original exclusivity is immediately globalized. (All aside, grime is an interesting study of localization). But for those naysayers of grime outside of its roots, I'd ask you to compare it to hip-hop's worldwide outreach. If you aren't American, it ain't hip-hop then, right?? Absolutely not.

After going back to Cali, I started writing strictly-hype party bars for dubstep parties, still devoting 90% of my listening time to grime and trying to translate it to dubstep. I love it, and it still commands a massive amount of my listen pleasure. On the other end, I don't listen to the amount of dubstep I should, considering my Santa Babylon clique throws the biggest pure bass parties in the 805. Bar none. But dubstep is not grime. And my foray into my "stateside grime"; state-grime or grime-state --whatever I choose to call it-- was never really imprinted upon me by dubstep's rise.

Flash-back, after hitting up a Zion I show in Santa Barbara, I got a minute to talk to AmpLive, a massively talented and recognized West-coast producer. Having just got back stateside to Cali in early 2009, I wanted to know his take on grime and if he thought it could explode out here. He brushed it aside almost laughably, saying that grime already hit here, further citing the likes of Dizzee's arrival and quick departures. Then when I asked him what he thought of dubstep, his attitude and feelings on the subject immediately changed. He was currently finishing up his dubstep album "Electro Wonderland Vol. 2" (which I believe has been renamed and released since under a different title). In my opinion, with all respect due, what Amp failed to recognize is that dubstep's continued rise can enable a massive amount of support for its ailing-sister sound. A re-ignition if you will, for grime's potential in the U.S and globally. Stateside bass emcees such as Los Angeles' highly rated Kemst, getting on dubstep are steady gaining artistic exposure outside of hip-hop. Across the Atlantic, P-money has used dubstep to quickly rise to the top ranks in the LDN scene. Aside from dubstep, grime icon Skepta just did a track with fucking P-Diddy. Sorry Amp, but I'm inclined to disagree... don't count grime out yet. Again, Tré Mission demonstrates a prime example of this theoretical process.

In addition to this thought, America loves the artist-centric aspect of hip-hop that it almost bleeds out of our modern youth. This is something dubstep purposefully lacks, and for good reason. Too much noise can filter out the pure sub-low sensation of a Funktion-1 system that the current bass-oriented starchild is strictly known and produced for. Grime is an usually identical-tempo 2-step version of that vocal, artist-centric American admiration. It can feed the needs of a US subculture that has been seriously tarnished after such a commercial, ignorant, and simply unimaginative period for so many years.

Don't get me wrong, I still am hip-hop. And there will always be those hidden gems in the depths of a city, and the corners of the globe. Big up Australia right now. Rhyme Sayers still on it as well. Unfortunately, I've become a bit too disconnected to the current US underground scene, that I shouldn't comment about it. Though I don't see any big changes, just look at "Rock the Bells." But that's not a problem, simply a well-earned legacy. Some people are understandably comfortable living in "golden eras." Others decide to progressively push the boundaries forward. Case and point: Theophilus London.

So grime became my ting. I didn't choose it, it chose me. My efforts could go far easier experimenting with other sounds, but "that's me" I suppose. For the promo video, I used a tune from my top rated producer in the scene: Maniac. A true-to-youth producing savant. Borrowed off his instrumental album from 2009, It's a pure, incontestable grime riddim. I really wish I could inevitably show it to the man... his exit out the game was critical for such a close-knit community and will truly be missed. Big up for being the best producer in your trade and BLESS.

So we used his track with my bars as the promo video. The video ended up out of sync, from the vocals, probably cause we were too drunk by the time editing came around. Basically an introduction to Hoodzpah, the Santa Babylon resident dubstep emcee, finally unveiled from behind the curtain of chest pummeling bass at live dance events only. So Rebel-Elite hit the streets of Boston with only one day before heading off to rave out in NYC for 4th of July weekend. Banged it out quick, then let the chips fall where they may. We had no fucking clue what we were doing, but we also wouldn't have it any other way. Most importantly, we made it a party. I haven't had that much fun with a homie on train tracks since the vodka-induced days of my youth. Shooting music videos is actually really dope. So please enjoy the creation as much as I enjoyed creating it. If not, well... that's me. P.E.A.C.E.

Santa Babylon 8.20.10

Rounding out the summer in raw fashion, the Santa Babylon clique is back on tricks. There's just two weeks until Black Rock City, when the physically temporary, yet soul-everlasting, metropolis is erected once again in the Nevada desert... Burning Man. So one last party for all the SB locals before the Burn was deemed necessary. Friday, August 20th @ Statemynt club, Santa Babylon presents Burning Man "Pre-Compression". With an all-city line-up of DJ's, this event will hopefully relieve the exciting angst all my Playa people are feeling as the closing countdown to the Burn comes nigh. Though I finally have the fiscal freedom to attend, Hoodzpah will not be hitting the Playa because of formal education responsibilities. Although, something dwelling within is telling me The Burn would educate a twenty-something kid exponentially more so than college ever could. Nevertheless, I feel a certain level of contentment creating a Pre-Compression event for the 805 burner massive. Since joining the Babylon crew, I've gained experience through observation and interaction on throwing parties. With this in thought, the dons of our bass team, Step Correct and ERS-One, allowed your boy Hoodzpah to take reigns and front-man this particular one-off. (Once again, bless you twos for that). Rest assured to the Babylon regulars, everything has been locked down and the usual bass-bombed chaos is sure to ensue on State Street once again. The guidance of the Step and ERS along with assistance from our lovely galdem is going to make this one poppin' party. So get that bass face engaged and ready to rage, Babylon "Pre-Compression" is gonna rock your fucking headtop. Bar none.

Three local crews collaborating with the Santa Babylon clique for this one. Underground Souls, coming off a wild, glammed-up summer, including an ridiculous July 4th event, will be represented with DJ Level. Taking you back with an all-vinyl Trip-hop and Acid Jazz, this will be a set of a certain rarity from one of SB's baddest DJs on the block. An EOS regular and underground legend, Level will have some wicked material to drop on your dome, in a form atypical to his usual club sets.

(DJ level always brings the party. All vinyl, all night, always).

Making his State club debut, Diamonds & Guns will represent the nascent burner crew The Family. True to the name they are a tight-knit group with arms wide open to those of a similar nature. Get at them at the party regarding where they will be camping at BRC. Familiar with his style, D&G will have some banger dubstep club riddims that will lay you out and keep the night progressing into madness. Talent unheard by a lot of SB locs, I guarantee the showcase with Santa Babylon by this Mexican selectah will surprise many. Be prepared for sonic assault.

(Diamonds & Guns on some beats, basslines and sunshine).

Headlining the night until the place shuts us down will be CityMavrick. Then proceeded in tandem by 9FeetOfSmoke, aka DrVktr, both soundbwoys representing D.F.H.Y. (DudeFuckingHellYeah!). D.F.H.Y. theme camp has gained a reputation on the Playa for their wicked party dome, supplying a musical range of Black Metal to Dubstep. They're camp will be located at 9:00 and Detroit and consists of Burners from all over the map. They are not too miss at this year's Metropolis on the Playa; it's a Black Rock City designated landmark insane asylum. True to fashion, CityMavrick will be dropping bombers at prime-time for "Pre-Compression". Followed up by his D.F.H.Y. blunt brother and Santa Babylon selectah 9FT to steady melt your face. Raw flesh off the skull making the dance floor slick in the darkness... tread lightly, but step hard.

(CityMavrick rocking w/ MC Kemst at S.M.O.G, LA).

Our Babylon Babes will be in full effect. This time we are taking it up a notch with six of Santa Barbara's sexiest dancers: Aya, Catalyst, Eeve, Coyote, Daisy and the illuminating Firefly. These go-go's love bass wobbles as much as us! We will have platforms set up in back area for them to demo their graceful hooping skills. Yet another attraction to inundate you throughout the night. They're hoop and poi aesthetics will also alleviate the traffic congestion on the limited Statemynt dance floor, which has gotten a bit hectic as the Santa Babylon reputation rises.

(Catalyst of Pyro Nation and straight outta Babylon).

In addition, for the first time we will be providing vendors as well. Our dancing girls, AyaPapaya and CoyotePheonix will be teaming up together to provide all the burners and fashonistas with wicked jewelry, headwear and other prime accessories to look fly on the Playa. Check out and even pre-order some of their gear on the tagged links. Nikki representing Save Rose Clothing will also provide some of her tees to sport. So don't for get that cash rules.

(Coyote's dance and design skills will be pulsating "Pre-Com").

This is sure to be an amazing night and proper send-off to all the SB burners. Chest pummeling beats will melt your face so hard, its gonna feel like Playa dust grinding your eyeballs. Don't forget to sport your desert gear! Moar Lasers. Moar Bass. MOAR LIFE. 805 represent!! Black Rock City or BUST. P.E.A.C.E.

Love, Actually?

(Yup, that's me, still on that baggy, saggy jeans tip, haha. London, 2008).

Love at first sight? Ha. Certainly not. Recently I'm feeling like the idea of true love between people is just an expressive conduit we just label as truth because it fits so well. Perhaps those vividly brilliant moments of happiness, so often haphazardly swept upon us, are a reflection of the environment and personal reception with those we shared them with at the time. As for myself, such a particular experience came from an unknown city in a foreign culture. But this phenomenon may manifest at any occurrence of a shared, elated experience. A place that blossoms a sentiment of love toward one, or even multiple individuals. I would never usually believe in love at first sight. Standard. But c'est le vie... and it's one big trip. Those who have garnered a flash of instant attraction, which was then built upon into an ensuring relationship, and eventual eternity may seem so. After all, such an extended scenario undoubtedly seems meant to be. But I'm no high, late-night cynic blogger. I have experienced love at first sight... I think.

An instant, though no less strange attraction occurred absolutely. I was never to know if I loved her. Regardless of my inconsistent feelings that will continue to shift from yesterday into tomorrow, I know there was definitely love involved. If you haven't noticed already, my personal expression of love in the present has shifted with each word scrawled in this post. I should probably stick to music where I can relay those sentiments much better. No worries, there is plenty soul-striking music in this one 'ere.

Now back to my original concept about love initiated, or even just developing, "at first sight". My ambiguous idea (as if I can think straight on this) suggests those heart-felt moments of love are more so based on the connection of 'loving life' (happiness), and allowing that to transcend into a connection with those people you're surrounded by and sharing such energy. That's quite obvious on itself. But that undeniability reels out of control when the idea of a soul-mate style love between two individuals is put in the spotlight. Could cupid really aim efficiently on a crowded, smoke-and-laser filled dance floor, in a dark labyrinth after downing a couple pints of pilsner? Really??

So then the hasty memory proceeds. Dancing to some dirty bass after being surprisingly swept off a back-alley concrete curb by what seemed like a sleek vampire in true fashion who likes to watch things burn. Super sexy in her dancing threads; black pants, on black skate shoes, on a black top. So simple. Her true physical elegance was yet to be witnessed... like goddess status-- no joke. With barely words spoken we kissed. There was no emotion at all. But my drawl toward her remained. "Who the fuck is this?", kept leaping through my head. After that night, her image would be a primary thing revolving in my mind for weeks. However, I was giving little concern to the environment I was in. A U.S. kid in a foreign country connecting in a wordless world of the illest-electronic beats on the planet, and sharing this moment with another foreign stranger carrying the attitude of a Russian bad girl in her graceful 2-step. A multiculturalist named Rozé, who was actually quite sweet when tastefully sampling life's nectar on her own terms. She owned her element and anyone that tried to step into it. Being used to plastic Cali girls in my native upbringing, this one was everything I never got to see and single-handedly changed my perception on my type of woman. Her other hand was holding a cocktail.

Without getting easily carried away with my recollection, I can't help but feel it actually derives from the particular time and space I was in... and a blessed nostalgia that continues to follow. That personal place in the world that will never be replaced and can never be brought back. That was the love I was longing for and that I found in her. That's perhaps why I feel such strong feelings for someone I met 3 years ago. I barely even knew her. I had much longer and"intense"
relationships (in the traditional-contextual sense of the word) around the same time period, but Rozé had the ability to erase all of those lovely women in a heartbeat. Little did I know our last kiss that night would be one of the very few in our ever so strange relationship. Two planet's colliding but only one takes the hit. Her lukewarm reception was blatantly evident, often frustrating and mind-bending at times. Yet I was allured by it, never really knowing if I even warmed to her. But to not be requited didn't matter in the end. It was that illicit pleasure I craved for. I mean, for no one else could I imagine buying my own packs of cigarettes, which happened to be her favorite brand, just to share one with her... and I don't even smoke. Because just like a cigarette, I wanted that momentary high with complete disregard for the consequences.

All I know is those memories of that city will never be the same without her. I don't think I loved her, but then again I've contradicted that numerous times already in this story. For someone who enjoys controlling a situation, this adorable and perplexing creature was the most interesting, exciting and enticing person I've ever met... and I had absolutely no grasp. Who will come next, Jah only knows. But that city I love so much, and those people I also cared for so dearly, which created moments in time that will never be completely captured; these are all encapsulated in
Rozé. So if that's what love a first sight is, then it most definitely can happen. And it ain't no long ting, trust me. Bless.

Below is a song I've been hooked on ever since I was shown it earlier this summer. Definitely my favorite joint so far this year. The rapidly rising artist, Theophilus London via
Brooklyn, NY generates sounds of earlier hit genres like funk, eletro, soul and punk, melding them into progressive reusability, while maintaining that be-easy signature hip-hop vibe. Certainly not one to take your eyes off in the near future. A charming man indeed. My south-coast creepers can catch Theophilus London at HARD Summer 2010 this Saturday, August 7th in Los Angeles.

In pure rhythm with my post, his spectacular video "Humdrum Town" is about how going back to a certain place -- a country, a city, a street -- can and will be forever altered once that one you loved it with is gone. I originally got into this tune in Brooklyn coincidentally. Authentic yes, but I'd I'll prefer to take it back to the CB-1 and blast my headphones on a badboy BMX. Thinking of her it's a different city, but change is the only thing that's constant.... so ride on. P.E.A.C.E.

The Real Queen of Britain

Many were recently disheartened to hear about the upcoming departure of BBC Radio1's experimental bass host, Mary Anne Hobbs. Anyone who knows me personally, knows I'm a heavy fanboy of hers. Normally I'd reject with embarrassment and complete deniablity such a label. But with Mary Anne, I can't hide the truth: I absolutely adore her. I most definitely would not be in the subcultural realm I am today without her weekly guidance on global bass music. So let me tell you the story of a naive kid stranded on a far away island...

After moving to the UK, I was actually introduced to dubstep that first week in January 2008. At the time, it was quite unavoidable in Britain as opposed to the US, which was en route to materialize to the almost comparable level it is today. A friendly stranger whom I'd met dropped off a copy of Kode 9 and Spaceape's "Memories of the Future". Although I liked it for exposing me to those deep, dark, tripped-out qualities, I still think it was a bit heavy as an introduction to dubstep from an American novice. (I now rate it as one of my top bass albums ever). After coming to love those plowing, guttural basslines I still tended to treat it as strictly party music. Which was totally welcomed at the time, especially dwelling in the authenticity of urban Britain. Where a bit of acid or ketamine made even the most deep and desolate of dubstep feel like "party music.

It wasn't until August of '08 that dubstep would become entrenched in me. That same stranger whom blessed be with the sound, had by then become my best mate. He gave me a mix which he explained that I just had to check out. The normally articulate, expressive rollerblader didn't even have words for it... just left it for me listen. That mix was the now infamous "Generation Bass" on Mary Anne's show. For the those unfamiliar, in 2006, the now trademarked dubstep pioneers of today had come together on MAH's show to produce a legendary set known as "Dubstep Warz". In tandem with Mary Anne's heavy work with Barcelona's Sonar Festival, this show became one of the pivotal moments in dubstep's still burgeoning history, helping precipitate it's ignition to eventual world-wide stardom.

(Mary Anne Hobbs @ Sonar Festival Barcelona, 2010).

Anyways, for summer 2008, MAH had gathered all of the same producer-DJ's of Warrior Dubz; Mala (Digital Mystikz), Skream, Kode 9, Vex'd, Hatcha, Loefah and Distance. She asked each of the preceding to choose a special up-and-coming artist to champion. A symbolic torch passing if you will; the hype for this show was eagerly anticipated and massive recognition would surely follow. This one-off two hour event -- all alone underneath the stars with a spiff in hand-- single-handedly made me a full-throttle bass head. An eclectic line-up indeed. Joker and Kulture became and still are my favorite producers, one respectively introducing the "purple" sound to the world, as the latter rescinded into poet irrelevance; albeit with true unsung classics under belt. Not an old-school UKG head till way later, Oneman's garage overtones opened and blew my mind. Chef, although not producing at the time, went on to mix the classic Dubstep Allstars series and is still a ascending internationally. Starkey rocked Maida Vale studios, making the transcontinental trip and representing the rising US scene. Cyrus (Random Trio) closed it out creating a deep, nightmarish environment just as dubstep began moving away from those traditional qualities.

(Mary Anne Hobbs @ WMC Miami, 2010).

After that show I began tuning in weekly. I remember leaving the clubs a bit early on Wednesday nights just to come home, spark up, and post-party with MAH woman. When I was unwilling forced to come back stateside in 2009, having withdrawals and cultural re-shock, Mary Anne gave me two hours of solace. When I'd miss a show I'd feel at a loss as if missing an important doctor's appointment. She always kept everyone ahead of the game. Her gentle laugh intoxicating, her voice as soothing as the deep dubplates provided. When she ventured back to Cali, where she used to reside years earlier, her West Coast Rocks special with XLR8R demonstrated her foresight ability of sonic aesthetics by producers that broke the rules and re-energized the global movement. Exposure of LA's Low End Theory boys and SF innovators like Lazer Sword began a powerful exchange of ideas back to the origins of the UK, and infecting everywhere else along the way. It was undoubtedly taking place without Mary Anne, she simply provided her audience with a panoramic lens to view the global, subcultural movement of bass-weighted material.

When I inevitably made it to Low-End Theory, I was finally granted the opportunity to see her live. Down from SB, I was alone in LA on a Wednesday night after leaving my credit card and passport with the bar at S.M.O.G. the night before. It was a random occurrence that also happened to coincide on birthday. Finally meeting Mary Anne and induced by her gravitating personality and warm, congenial manner, only solidified my admiration for her. The set was outstanding. And when I mentioned I had come down from SB and it was my birthday, the queen granted me a sweet kiss on the cheek... best B-day gift ever.

(Mary Anne Hobbs and Hoodzpah @ Low End Theory, 2010)

Now she's moving on... as she posted a full statement on her MySpace this week:

"Last week I resigned from BBC Radio1, after an amazing multi-dimensional 14 year career. The great freedoms the BBC have given me as a broadcaster, have allowed me to help break so many confrontational artists as diverse as Slipknot and Skream, and of course, the whole genre of Dubstep in recent times. My current Experimental show is in peak condition, it’s never been stronger. And although it’s a very emotional decision to leave the show that I love so much, it’s also an optimum moment to bow out, at the very top of my game. My work for Radio1 on the Breezeblock, Rock Show, many fascinating documentaries about everything from David Bowie to Dubstep, on daytime, at festivals and award ceremonies, has been exceptionally rewarding. These have been glory days not just for me, but for all the artists who have shared my BBC platform, and of course, the listeners everywhere from Beijing to Berlin, Baltimore to Blackpool, who shared a great passion for future sound. I will continue to DJ live, work in film, and curate at Sonar festival in Barcelona. I have also accepted a new job mentoring and teaching students at the University of Sheffield’s Union Of Students radio station, TV station and the newspaper that operate out of their superb Forge Media Hub, which presents me with a really exciting new challenge. My last show on BBC Radio1 will be broadcast: September 8th>>9th … Wednesday night >> Thursday morning… 2-4am www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/maryannehobbs Thank you so much for listening." --Mary Anne Hobbs

No, thank you, Mary Anne. Your show became a staple in my life for a good spell. It will be sad not to hear that lovely, gratifying voice, but we all wish you the best in your future endeavors. You mean the world to so many people, the world over, personifying our passion for music and culture so unique and unparalleled. Can't wait to catch you back in LA for some live action! P.E.A.C.E.

Santa Babylon 7.16.10

Summertime for the Santa Babylon clique has been rolling on by like clouds in the sky. June gave us one of our best shows to date. Yet difficult to compare them... Jungle legend APX-1's special dubstep set was as outstanding as it was exclusive. Especially, as he nonchalantly relayed, "I've only been spinning it for a few months." Although I've only been playing my part behind the decks since early 2010, I had never seen someone mix so fast. As a nascent emcee in this shit, I must say... Damn, that was hard to keep up with. Along the lines of: 16 bars, drop new track, 16--drop, 16--drop. Bewilderment and excitement flowing through my blood, I couldn't stop admiring the skill. Then I'd remember I'm supposed to be hosting. Inevitably, my line of sight would drift from the crowd back to the turntables, as a moth to a light. He very early on switched the house Serato vinyls with his own, functionally identical pair. Expressing that he just had to. I understood, as he quickly tossed aside the house Serato's bright pink vinyl, and got back to the mastery.

On top of APX-1's mixment, there were loads of well-hard dubs in which I wasn't familiar. A few, which I would highly recommend, came from LA's Belgian badboy KNORSQ. Hosting a weekly radio show called BOMBADUB Fridays on sub.fm, where you can catch AKAIDER -- LIVE, TONIGHT at 8-10 pm pst. KNORSQ's hip-hop infused bass-rated innovations are becoming a staple within California. We also happened to host him in Santa Babylon last April in a knock-out party that would have made you think Coachella was canceled that weekend.

Our other guest selectah of June, local DJ Pursuade, destroyed it. With an almost beyond-natural ear for music (I've heard him do-up a variety of types) , man once again catered extremely well to the Santa Barbara niche in which he is becoming well established. Only recently has he begun to shift his interest moar to the darker side of electronic dance via dubstep. Looking FWD>> to the future collaborations! Our boy ERS-1, was celebrating both he and his newly-wedded wife's B-day. Big up, Geminis. So we made sure to make it a party... as usual. Which actually happens to be our standard platform and business model. Gotta have fun, get down, and get the fuck out (1:30 on the dot, or Babylon get the axe by the babylon, if ya get me). And we always do it with SB style -- it is after all, a proper bass party. All we need is moar bass. And we always got it... but that doesn't mean we can't always need moar, always. Right? Never.

Anyways, its about that time of month again. Santa Babylon will be turning up the summer heat Friday, 7.16.2010 @ Statemynt, State Street. This round presenting Los Angeles' own Dumbsteppaz. Originally dubbing their name -- as I was told -- for hating on the still-burgeoning scene awhile back. But like the rest of the lot: everyone comes around. As a dubstep artist, I admit, -- it took me a good minute to get into it. Luckily, living in the UK at the time undoubtedly expedited that listening pleasure. I was recently shown their remix of Die Antwoord, the S.A. trio we featured in April. Take a listen to the remix, below.

Die Antwoord - Enter The Ninja (Dumbsteppaz Remix) by Dumbsteppaz

Dumbsteppaz will also be featured along side MC Werd. The Los Angeles area emcee has been developed in the jungle/DnB and hip-hop underground for years. Naturally, dubstep was no long ting. Werd has rocked alongside world class DJs at classic LA events such as Ghettolife and Tonz of Drumz', "I ♥ LA". He also runs his own weekly event UPGRADE, every Wednesday in Costa Mesa, OC. Santa Babylon played there in April and it was off the hook. I highly recommend it for the OC bass kids. Try and pre-party a bit at Taco Mesa near-by, cool spot... but avoid unintentionally whistling at over-guarding women like Step Correct's true-bro faux-pas.

^Hoodzpah better take notes...

Definitely look FWD>> to this Los Angeles link-up. Let's be sure to give them a great reception by showing SB how we get down. That said, there will be plenty of the locals steppas -- who undoubtedly make or break a party -- out in full force. It's a strange thing to watch how the SB scene -- though equally strong at either time -- is rapidly altered by the dismissal of university classes for the summer. Not better necessarily, just different. I think that's a part of why the last APX-1 show in May, was held in such high-regard. I was just tripping on different vibes.

Having now preambled the local tip, I'm pleased to let you know next Friday's show will also bring you 805 DubCorps crew member and mutual supporter, Seppuku. The collective, front-manned by man, have a growing dubstep night at midtown's Creekside Bar and Grill. Although the venue and location is a bit different, its also ironically what makes it. First off, it's on a Thursday, one of youth-ridden Santa Barbara's finest nights. They also make it an 18+ event, which is something Santa Babylon, and the city itself, has been lacking since our arrival on State St. ended our back alley under-21 action. We miss all you on that Statemynt dance floor... but most your days are coming! Big upz, Dub Corps for feeding the need. Other welcoming points of contrast between D.C. is their mash-ups off all genres of bass. The crew plays rather obscure and extremely solid sets of hardcore, jungle, D&B, bassline, 2-step, grime, etc. I believe this gives the rapidly exploding, and thus, commercializing aspect of the dubstep scene, a new set of ears to hear other forms of underground music that they normally wouldn't surrender to. Once again, big upz, brochachos. Oh yeah, they also got BBQ till 11PM! Dub Corps keeps it moving for the blazers.

(Dub Corps's Sepukku performing at a S. American prison -- Heavy).
^R.E. Union will soon post some interesting input about this tour from Sepukku.

July 16th's event will also be having the usual Babylon soundbwoys pulling bro out shenanigans between blasted airhorns and tapping bottles; which by the way, should better be rationed out this time around before we get too low -- physically, and bottle-wise. Airhorns too. Hectic. Anyway... this mid-summer's night is gonna be the kicks! So bring your best pair and get ready to dance the night away with bass-pummeling shockwaves rinsing out the night.

On another note, Santa Babylon will be playing EOS night club's "Friday Night Cover," TONIGHT, July, 9th. I hear 9FeetOfSmoke's rumored to drop some rare house tunes for the EOS crowd. Uh oh. If your prone to face melting, be sure to wear your sunglasses tonight. Too many lasers. Not sure how the emcee situation will work out for this venue. Although it is a part of our show, I'll be stoked to see you there regardless... behind the decks or on the dance floor! Especially my boy Chris G. celebrating his born day -- mesa loc style. We will be in the newly established Goddess Lounge. DJ Wicked will be in his zone on the adjacent stage. Thanks to EOS night Club and Lounge for the wicked opportunity. You can also catch SB's Underground Souls collective now on the regular at the same venue. Next US-affiliated night will showcase Niko, bringing the styles with an extended 2.5 hour set, alongside the usual suspects on July, 23rd @ EOS.

Participating in a few undergrounds within the 805 for the remainder of July, Santa Babylon does have some wicked surprises coming your way for the rest of summer and into the year. Including a couple of our artists' individual production releases, massive headliners, bigger events, flavorful merchandise and MOAR BASS. So stay chooned. Check out Santa Babylon Group on Facebook for the latest updates. SantaBablyon.com will be up and running again shortly. Big tings a gwaan on in SB. Step up! P.E.A.C.E.

Undergrounds Souls: Short Fuse @ Red' s 7.4.10

It's about that time of year when we get to celebrate our separation from those damn Britons. These days, in an inescapable global interdependence in which no one is exempt... I generally like to think of myself as a multiculturalist. (I think others will eventually follow suit). Thus, national holidays don't generally exact a high level of patriotism out of me. Especially with the current complexity regarding my relationship to my national homeland. America. However, these holidays do get me quite thrilled. No, not of any homogeneous, nationalistic pride, excreted by trumped-up symbolism... but rather, excitement for the partaaaay! July 4th for myself is up there with New Years, Guy Fawkes Night and Summer Solstice. There's little better than eye-gasmic pyrotechnics exploding in the air over beautiful waterfronts whilst sipping a cold, inebriating beer on a warm, summer night. Northern merchants hand-in-hand with Southern farmers in outlandish toasts of "yee-haaws!!" and "brrooo!!"

Then of course, there's the stomping beats to dance the night away in total freedom. Bless our founding father's for their vision, even if those ideals are in a state of flux as time carries history. For all my Santa Barbara locals and vacationers coming to California's "paradise" for the weekend, there will be plenty of activities to keep your mind, body and soul inundated throughout the day and night. However, I can guarantee with absolute scientific precision, that the place to be in the 805 this Independence Day is Red's Wine Bar.

This July 4th, Underground Souls presents "Short Fuse". (The same collective that brought you the dance floor kinetics last year is back on it again -- just a few blocks away from the West Beach's fireworks display). If you're not familiar with the US crew, they have been throwing underground parties for a few years now. After building a local following in the 805, they have begun to showcase themselves more actively in clubs and other venues throughout Santa Barbara. It's not just the amazing beats and technically well-mixed sets ranging from sub-genres of techno to house to trip hop, then back full circle. Diverse as they all are, this crew encompasses a full sound which maintains a constant state of energy and unity throughout. It's the souls of these people. That's probably why US prides itself on being "souled out, not sold out." Which happens to be something I wish the other "U.S." would do). The close knit relationships of the DJs to the people they play for creates a positive environment unmatched in the Santa Barbara dance scene. Completely open to all people who come with this positivity; sharing life's energy with one human to another, one bass at a time.

Like any dope party, the family of supporters is most important. At they're parties I've come across some of the most pure-hearted individuals I've ever met... surprising, since I've only known them for less than a year. Myself being a complete bass head, usually preferring Dubstep, DnB and Hip-Hop, I generally find myself passing up those events as of late, in order to party with US. That's saying a lot personally, considering the level of passion toward my particular music interests. But the energy their events put into the atmosphere is addictive. If you've never been to their parties, one can't help but feel so much love and affection from "strangers." And not in that odd, substance-induced, full-trip way. Just pure hearts and open minds.

My point is, the anticipated escape to a night with the Underground Souls is something that always brings a smile to my face. I keep typing, but the words can't describe it. You just have to experience it for yourself. The next opportunity is this Sunday, July 4th @ Red's Wine Bar.

Oh and don't forget the awesome fire spinners, BBQ, drink specials, beautiful people and of course, the left speaker.

With this momentum, US are making some great moves within the Santa Barbara community. So get up and get out this weekend... and don't forget those reds, whites and grooves! P.E.A.C.E.

Straight Lynched

Political flurry has exploded across Britain with the May 6th elections. The stoic people of this industrialized island nation, so used to dwelling in the traditional platform of a 2+ party system with an even more traditional political system, are watching this years election with special interest. Due to the rise of the Liberal Democrats over the past weeks --based on stellar performances in the first ever televised debates, from their fresh, articulate leader, Nick Clegg-- political efficacy has soared in Britain. That was demonstrated yesterday when Brits took to the polls in the closest-fought election in a generation, with a voter turnout of 65.2%. The outcome is even more surprising, having officially been declared a "hung Parliament." Not since 1974 has a hung Parliament occurred, in which no party has overall control of the Commons (326+ MP seats). Now the parties must create a coalition government with one another, which can be an uproarious task, especially noting the marked differences in ideology and policy in a diverse political culture.

The election has upended long-standing political certainties. What appeared to be a Conservative (Tories) victory has become a defeat for the reforming, energetic leader David Cameron. The centre-left Liberal Democrats did even worse than pre-polling indicated, but their pivotal role in forming a coalition still makes them the kingmakers to be appeased. And tarnished Gordon Brown could remain Prime Minster even though Labour has incurred its work electoral showing in decades. Queen Elizabeth, as head-of-state, is charged with the task of ultimately inviting someone to become Prime Minister. As a simple figure head, the Queen must tread lightly on political issues. With no written constitution, history deems the Queen allow the sitting PM to try to form a government first. ('Government' in Britain simply translates as cabinet or administration). But a massive public back lash against Gordon Brown, who was obviously obliterated after 13 years of Labour rule, may fuel discontent toward Britain's adored Queen. I'm sure she wants no part. Despite the media hype attributing the Tory and Lib Dem's rise to their young, charismatic leaders, I believe it's more a back-lash against Labour who has dominated the political environment since the '90s. But perhaps Britain's unreformed political system and the ideological divisions with in it, could lead to continued Labour rule. Following the aftermath of selecting a new PM, my hope is that they nice up US-UK immigration. I gotta get back, son!

Taking you lot back with a grime classic from Manchester representative and Virus Syndicate affiliate, Skittles. Although the Mankunion hit "Blair" is a bit dated targeting the now-ousted Tony Blair, it seems fitting for the moment. As he says, "So we're seeing the end of Blair, yeah? But know this is for all you politicians." Skittles is without a doubt one of the most under-rated grime artists in the scene. Using his music with a keen ability to translate messages into true substance, Skitz does away with the tired hype-talk of a typical grime emcee. If you haven't heard this throw back from a few years, just kick back with a spliff, heed the outstanding lyricism, and watch the political turmoil unfurl. P.E.A.C.E.

Skittles - Blair

^Give that a listen; grafted off his debut LP "Two Pints of Brandy and a Packet of Skittles." But also check this little ghetto-fab video which actually came out dope. The audio quality on the vocals is a bit distorted, so if your not familiar with N. English accents or grime flow cadences, check the above track first, then load up the video. It's got a slight difference in instrumental composition, so it's a fresh sound on a classic tune. Not to mention the video subject matter, featuring Skitz himself, is straight wicked.

Bass Invades State

Alright, alright. It's time to get back to what this blog thang was about in the first place. Hype men. Time to big up my Santa Babylon crew. Haven't gotten into them on the interwebz since I first linked-up with the hometown brethren. Back when I was just a bass head having withdrawals from living in the UK. (Check out one of the first Rebel Elite Union post in early 2009 promoting Santa Barbara's underground bass scene, here.) A lot's changed since then. As much as the multifaceted faces of dubstep itself, I suppose.

These boys have gained the city's attention in just a year's time. From the cramped quarters of Muddy Waters café, filled with intentionally overloaded bass speakers, it seemed destined to remain an event well under radar. Recent turns in the Pacific current have placed us on the State Street scene, without forgetting the intentional overload of bass speakers. State is our high street for those who don't know, and in a paradise like S.B. it's a difficult task to bring effective underground music events to the city inhabited by the likes of Oprah and Ty Warner. You only get there once you tap the inner flex of the city.

By doing it blatantly, and in complete disregard -- straight dirty -- Santa Babylon opposes the typical appeasements of the masses. Ever tired of a night out on State and hearing the reverberation of Top 40 in every direction... we bring the BASS. One of our front men got socked in the kidney by some waste girl at the first State event in January cause she couldn't handle this shit. She started crying to herself. Her mascara dripped. Then my man played some more bass.

By mixing the true steppa's supporting since 2006 with those typical state street goers and friends of years past, Santa Babylon is making some serious moves. Who would have thought go-go's would ever work for a dubstep show? Yet, strangely we've pulled it off, even if their exact role is uncertain. The last event at Statyment, was the second and most rocking yet. Finally playing their own productions alongside dubstep's global bangers, my mandem is getting felt from the inner-shock waves to the most subtle vibrations.

Keeping it local since invading State with the talents of DJ's Professor West and Mackle, the seed has been sown. Past collaborations with friends up and down the Westcoast, from Portland-based LoDubs to LA's heavy hitting S.M.O.G. crew, the Santa Babylon syndicate is ready to trigger this earthquake everyone keeps hyping up. Basslines so deep it's putting tension on the tectonic plates. The fault line is Babylon. Invading your city one bass at a time.

Lastly, I want to big up everyone who contributed to our vision. First my Santa Babylon crew: ERS-1 a.k.a. DJ Magneto. We know how consumed you are in your life's priorities and appreciate your continued presence which is always desired and often a necessity. Step Correct, he'll guarantee that he's a good guy... while steadily melting your face. As well as City Mavrick and 9FeetOfSmoke, the burning man soundbwoys known to throw down the dopest dubstep parties on The Playa as DFHY; I can't wait to find out this summer. Music aside, these cats command a tremendous amount of respect from me personally when things got sticky last summer. So safe, y'all.

Outs to Akaider, the man with the cam always holding down the Los Angeles connection. Keep us reeling, rudeboy. Professor West and DJ Mackle we know this is the begining of something big for all of us. Respect requites respecting and you guys always throw down the weight proper! Big up's to my galdem KiT, Aya and Anom, our go-go-fire-playin'-poi-slingin'-hoopers. I've just been introduced to your wicked styles but you really livened up the place. To all my 'round the world girls getting low with the subs. And to all my Santa Barbara bass heads, old and new, who came just to skank up the night... Bless.

Be sure to check us out at the Play With Fire Productions' "Neverending Party" in San Luis Obispo April 10. Santa Babylon will be hosting the Dub stage the entire night with talent from throughout the central coast. Professor West will also be making an appearance on the main stage. We'll be back at Statemynt on the 4.16.2010 and then we'll be bringing a little smoke to Ghetto Life and Tonz of Drumz' "I Love LA" 4:20 Celebration Day, 4.18.2010. Check SantaBabylon.com for upcoming events. P.E.A.C.E.
